Program Assistants

What is a Program Assistant (PA)?

SKATE CANADA Coaches are the primary teaching resource in your club and Program Assistants assist in the delivery of the program. Program Assistants will receive annual and ongoing training. The Program Assistants duties include:

  • assisting the SKATE CANADA Coach to deliver the program on and off ice
  • demonstrating skills and teaching progressions
  • supervising practice time
  • leading warm ups and cool downs under the direction of the SKATE CANADA Coach
  • reinforcing learned skills
  • handing out awards and incentives (ribbons, stickers, badges, etc)
  • taking attendance
  • assisting with on ice circuits
  • providing individual and group assistance
  • acting as a role model for young skaters

How Can I Become a Program Assistant?

Program Assistants are volunteer skaters.  To become a Program Assistant, ask a Coach or Skating Club Board Member.

Ideal Program Assistant candidates demonstrate:

  • a helping nature
  • patience with others around them
  • an ability to communicate ideas clearly
  • reliability
  • a sense of commitment to tasks
  • qualities of a good role model
  • ability to lead activities in a creative, enthusiastic manner
  • in addition, the candidates should ideally be 10 years of age or older and have passed the Preliminary Free Skate Test.  Skating ability may surpass age requirement to become a Program Assistant.  

Program Assistant Rewards

The Skating Club rewards Program Assistants in various ways throughout the skating season.  

Volunteer Hours may also be earned by Program Assistants, if needed, towards school community service hours.
